15 Heat Transfer terms

This electronic glossary contains key vocabulary and concepts from reading Chapter 3 of the book "Heat Transfer - A Practical Approach" to familiarize yourself with the terminology.

Conduction shape factor

It is the determination of the distribution of conduction emitted between one surface and another, this helps us to determine the heat exchange.
Example: Once the shape factor value for a specific geometric configuration is known, the total steady-state heat transfer rate can be determined.

Convection resistance

It is the inverse of the convection heat transfer coefficient per unit area.
Example: When the convection heat transfer coefficient is very large, the convection resistance becomes zero and the surface temperature approaches full temperature.

Critical radius of insulation

It is the measure of the radius of an insulator in which the heat transfer is maximum or the resistance of the heat flow is very low.
Example: When placing an insulating material, it must be verified that its external radius is greater than the critical radius or that the critical radius is less than the radius of the exterior cylinder, so that it duly complies with its insulating property.

Cylinder conduction resistance

It is the opposition of heat conduction that exists in the cylindrical layer.
Example: For the calculation of the conduction resistance of the cylinder it is necessary to know the radius lengths and the thermal conductivity.

Efficiency

It is a dimensionless coefficient or ratio calculated as the quotient of the energy produced and the energy supplied, it is a measure of performance.
Example: The equation shows that higher levels of efficiency are obtained with a higher temperature gradient between hot and cold fluids.

Fin effectiveness

Is the relationship between the thermal power that is dissipated in it and the thermal power that is dissipated without the fin from the area of the base that the fin occupies on the primary surface.
Example: The Fins are solids that transfer heat by conduction along their geometry and by convection through their environment.

Fin efficiency

The efficiency of a fin is the relationship that exists between the heat that is transferred from a fin under certain conditions, and the maximum heat transfer that would exist if that fin were at the maximum temperature.
Example: Fins are used in all air coolers to transfer energy from a liquid medium to air or inversely.

Interface resistance

It is a measure of the resistance of an interface to heat flow.
Example: Low thermal resistance at interfaces is technologically important for applications where very high heat dissipation is required.

Plane wall conduction resistance

It represents the ability of the different materials that make up our flat wall to oppose the flow of temperature.
Example: The thermal resistance of a wall depends on the thermal conductivity of the materials that compose it and the applied thickness.

Radiation resistance

It is the limitation or opposition to the transfer of heat energy to a body through electromagnetic waves
Example: Radiation resistance can be calculated from the total radiated power and the current at the input.

Sphere conduction resistance

It is the opposite of the heat conduction that exists in the spherical layer.
Example: To calculate the conduction resistance of the sphere, it is necessary to know the lengths, radii and thermal conductivity.

Surfaces

Refers to a solid that experiences energy transfer by conduction within its limits, as well as energy transfer by convection and / or radiation between its limits and the surroundings.
Example: If the arrangement is of the longitudinal type, it can be assumed that the embedding surface where the fin rests is flat.

Thermal contact conductance

Represents the conduction of heat between two solid bodies.
Example: Thermal contact conductance is a complicated phenomenon, influenced by many factors such as; Contact pressure, Interstitial materials, Roughness, waviness and flatness of the surface.

Thermal contact resistance

Contact thermal resistance is the inverse of contact thermal conductance. Thermal resistance manifests itself as a sudden temperature jump at the junction.
Example: Thermal contact conductance can be minimized by applying a heat conductive liquid called thermal grease, such as CPU grease, to the surfaces before pressing together.

Total thermal resistance

The total thermal resistance would be the sum of each one of the thermal resistances of each material considering that this represents the capacity of the material to oppose the flow of temperature.
Example: Total thermal resistance is the inverse of the heat transfer coefficient of an element.
